Multi-Tasking = Interrupts Focus
by williamhartz
Do you ever wonder why you can’t ever seem to get things done? Maybe you’re trying to do too many things at once. The core principle behind multitasking is selective ignoring, that principle is probably at the root of your productivity issues.
Your mind can only focus on one thing at a time. Whenever you try to accomplish more than one thing at a time, you are constantly interrupting your focus from the task at hand to something else.
There are many professions where the ability to switch from one task to another is paramount. Flying an airplane is one thing that comes to mind that requires the person charged with the task, aka the pilot, to be able to switch their attention between many different tasks at a moments notice.
Despite this ability to switch between many tasks, in the larger airplanes, there are multiple pilots on board as well as multiple automated processors in place filtering the information that gets to the pilots. There are also limitations to how long pilots can be at the command before they are mandated to take a rest.
Other professions do not have this same level of responsibility, or perhaps I should say, the same level of needing to pay attention to multiple inputs.
The point is, focus on one thing at a time, and focus on it to completion.
Even a juggler only concentrates on one thing at a time. If a juggler’s phone rings while they are juggling a bunch of things in the air, they ignore it because if they answer it, they risk dropping everything for an unrelated side task.
