How To Ensure Your Mobile Website Is High On The Usability Quotient?

Many people think that a mobile website is a miniature version of a traditional website. They are not way off the mark here, but to think that a website that can be accessed through mobile devices is only a highly reduced form of its traditional version is wrong.

Many people think that a mobile website is a miniature version of a traditional website. They are not way off the mark here, but to think that a website that can be accessed through mobile devices is only a highly reduced form of its traditional version is wrong.

The first thing that users want their mobile websites to be is usable. Such websites must bring to users a heightened sense of usability, which allows users to get the same benefits that they otherwise would have experienced while, accessing a website on their desktops and laptops.

Don’t decrease size but simplify

We are not talking about “Honey I shrunk the Website” here. What you don’t need to be doing is ensuring that everything on the standard website is offered on the mobile website, albeit with a marked reduction in size. You need to ensure that mobile developers and designers simplify your standard site and adopt a minimalist approach towards the development of the mobile website. So, they will need to begin with the graphic elements and eliminate those that are really not very necessary. This helps optimize the functioning of the mobile website.

You will then need to ensure that menus are redone to ensure that text is made available over a number of pages, so that it can be read easily and conveniently.  Simplification of the design and development aspect involves making the layout and functionality accessible to mobile users.

2

Unidirectional Scrolling

Imagine using a standard site that makes you scroll in all directions. Even thinking about it, frustrates you doesn’t it? So, it’s important that your mobile programming takes this factor into consideration and ensures that users on your mobile website are able to use the site by scrolling in just one direction; it could be horizontal scrolling or vertical scrolling in order to ensure a hassle free site usage.  For this, mobile developers need to ensure that all the necessary content fits into a page of a certain length. This will go a long way in improving the overall efficiency of the mobile website.

Minimizing use of images

The key to improving usability of any mobile website is to restrict the use of images. This will help save space, which in turn improves the clarity of the website and gets rid of confusion. The problem with the use of images is that there just isn’t enough space for using images logically and in manner that makes perfect sense.  So, if a person come across your mobile website, and is looking for some information and all he ends up seeing a mish-mash of images that don’t make any sort of sense, this doesn’t do anything for your website’s popularity. So, only use images if they are an absolute must.

These are just some of the many ways that one can improve the usability quotient of the mobile website. It’s important that in this case, your mobile programming takes a much simpler route and avoids all the complexities. This will help your mobile website be accessible to a much wider audience and ensures that it’s appreciated for its content and overall simplicity.
