While many people drudge away during their morning commutes and sit idly behind computers all day at jobs they hate they are oblivious to the vast spectrum of creative independent ways that there are to make a living – this article will focus on the unique niche business of vintage door hardware distribution.

Wherever there is demand for a product there is opportunity to profit from satisfying that demand. When most people think of retail products they are most likely to think of high end products (flat screen televisions) or products that they frequently use in their daily lives (plates and glasses) but the reality is that pretty much every item people come in contact with (outside of nature and government services) is the end result of someone selling and providing that product with a profit motive. The same individuals with the tunnel vision that keeps them unhappily pushing papers around a desk Monday through Friday from nine to five are the same folks that are not allowing themselves to see the plentiful opportunities for increased freedom, earning, and career satisfaction.

If you have looked at a landfill in the recent past you know our waste issues in this country are getting completely out of hand. This has a number of people wondering what they can do, on every level, to produce less waste and thereby leave a smaller carbon footprint. This article is about just that and focuses on something you probably would never think of when it comes to waste, cabinet hardware.

Cabinet hardware for the most part is relatively overlooked. How often do you really think about the pulls that open and close doors, drawers and cabinets in your home? Try this. Take a walk into your kitchen and count the number of knobs, drawer pulls, and other pieces of cabinet hardware that are in your kitchen. The total will likely surprise you. Now think if you were just doing a little remodeling job and decided to change out all of that cabinet hardware. That’s a lot of waste!

It’s often said that the devil is in the details, and this is particularly true when it comes to home remodeling projects. Whether you are giving your kitchen, your bathroom, your bedroom or the living room a makeover, it is important to pay attention to the small things as much as it is important to pay attention to the big things. New flooring like linoleum or carpeting, new furniture and appliances, new paint or wallpaper – all of these things are the big ticket items we tend to focus on the most. After all, they usually cost the most and take up the most space and time to get taken care of. But the smaller details, like your home hardware choices, are the things that really tie the whole room together and make the space look finished, polished, and “done.”

The best way to do this is to coordinate your home hardware with your décor AND the other hardware in the room. For example, if your kitchen is decorated in a French Country style, you can choose to go with rustic ceramic or wrought iron hardware to match that. Then match your door handles to your kitchen cabinet hardware by choosing pieces in similar shapes and sizes or materials. In the bathroom, you can match the door hardware to the cabinet knobs and pulls, and then take it a step further and match it to the faucets and other fixtures in the sink and bathtub. In any room in the home, you can match hardware to the materials used in the light fixtures and other elements.
