Getting ready to add new glass console tables to your home? Make sure you know what you are really getting or you could set yourself up for disaster.
When you walk into a furniture store, it’s the glass items that often get your attention first. There’s something about the way that the light hits them, and shines, which makes everyone think that glass furniture would be the perfect addition to their home.
Often, they are right. Glass furniture is stunning, especially if you are smart in your decorating and make sure that the light will hit that piece just right and make it dazzle. It makes your whole room look like a million bucks.
While looks are a lot, they aren’t everything. There are a few more things you need to think about before you bring any new glass console tables home.
How Much Weight Can It Handle
While the glass console tables you have fallen in love with may look just like you want them to, imagine how they would look if the whole glass top was shattered all over your home. Not quite the appeal you were hoping for, right? Well, this doesn’t have to be what happens as long as you make sure you know what the table can handle.
Glass is glass. While it is being used in furniture this does not mean that glass furniture pieces can handle more stress than other glass. You should ask a lot of questions about the weight load that the glass tabletop can handle so you know that it will hold up to your usage.
Look for yourself. If you can see the piece in person, you should inspect it more closely. Look at how the glass is put into the tabletop and how well it’s supported. Put a few books or a lamp on top and see how it holds up. These are good tests that the tables can handle what you ask of them.
If you are looking at furniture online, you should ask the company that is making them about the construction and support of the glass. While you may not be able to try it out in person, most of them have a liberal return policy so you can test it yourself once it arrives and send it back if you are not pleased with the quality.
Is it Tempered?
If there is any chance that hot and cold items are going to be put on your glass console tables, you need to make sure it is tempered glass being put into the tabletop.
This is a place where many people get caught up. A lot of people say they don’t need tempered glass console tables because they are not going to be used for serving anything. Think a little harder. Is there a chance that someone will put something hot on the tables? All it takes is one errant cup of coffee to be set down to shatter the entire tabletop.
Often, it is best to err on the side of caution and purchase tempered glass that can handle the changes in temperature, just in case.
