The Needle in the Haystack

Finding the cheapest cell phone plan in America is like finding a needle in a haystack. The cold, hard truth is that with all of the different plans that are out there and all of their confusing extras and features, you just about have to compare them all to find the cheapest one.

If you’re looking for that proverbial needle, the first thing you want to do is get as much hay off the stack as you can. In the case of finding the cheapest cell phone plan, the “hay” would be all of those who are not offering a great promotional special.

At first glance, you might think that choosing the cheapest cell phone plans from among these would be easy. If T-Mobile is ten bucks a month cheaper than Cingular (AT&T), for instance and its activation fee is the same, then that’s the company to go with, right? Not necessarily, because at the time of this writing, anyway, Cingular offers rollover minutes, while its competitor does not. Weighed in the balance, those rollover minutes might more than compensate for the extra $ 10 monthly charge. The moral here is that you can’t judge the cheapest cell phone plan by its monthly charges alone. You’ve got to also take into consideration those extra minutes. And again, look for the specials. T-Mobile or someone else might be cheaper next month or whenever you read this.

Given the fact that the average user talks for between 450 and 500 minutes a month on their mobile contract, you’ve got to factor your average talking time into the equation if you want to find the cheapest cell phone plan for your needs. If you love your cell and use it a lot, you might be better off getting a seemingly expensive unlimited plan rather than a limited plan with a set number of minutes.

When you add up the overages you will be paying with the limited plan, you might find that it’s not the cheapest cell phone plan if it ends up costing you far more than the unlimited plan.

The bottom line is this: if you want the cheapest cell phone plan, you’re going to have to do one of two things: take your time and compare or start using your phone far less. Since the trend with all wireless phone users is to use them more and not less, you’re probably going to have to sit down and read the fine print for all the providers and check online for the cheapest cell phone plan you can find at the moment you are ready to go. Those deals come and go, so be ready!
