Getting an information technology degree makes perfect sense in a world where the technology’s expansion rate shows no signs of slowing down. Those who love to work with computers and are looking for a solid and dependable career choice would be wise to consider the information technology field. No matter where one goes in the world, IT professionals will find their skills in demand.

It is no secret how much daily life has come to depend on computers and their various aspects. From computer programming to network engineering, the demand for intelligent and detail focused individuals are an essential element. This is especially true if things are expected to stay running in a functional and efficient manner.

Unbeknownst to many, there are a number of different career choices when it comes to the information technology field. While some careers are very detail oriented and have individuals working in solitary environments, others require the cooperation of many departments at a time. While some careers require an individual to think fast on their feet others simply require following preset instructions.

As long as a person has an interest in computers, there is likely a career in information technology that they will find fulfilling. As technology changes so do certain aspects of an information technology career. This guarantees an individual will never get stuck in a rut when it comes to their job.

More often than not, getting an information technology degree will also entail getting a particular type of certification in such areas as Cisco’s CCNA or Microsoft’s MCSE and other applications. These specialized skills can help further their career and gain just the earning power they have been looking for. A reputable information technology program is one that works closely with vendors such as Microsoft to help students get certified in all programs from MCSA and MCAD to Comptia’s A+ or Net+. Because technology changes as rapidly as it does, students may find they will need to update their certification from time to time. However, this keeps them at the forefront of the newest technologies as they emerge.

As technology progresses, the need for computer savvy technicians also rises; however, IT positions are not just filled by those walking in off the street. Until a person gets the right skills with the right education, an IT job will be completely off limits. Taking part in an accredited program will get the wheels going on an individual’s IT career in no time.

Depending on what an individual hopes to achieve, he or she can spend as little as one year learning the ropes for a new IT career. Extensive degrees can take two to four years to complete. The bonus of getting an information technology degree is that a person can build their career goals in the direction that fits them best.

For those already in the field looking to advance themselves, an accredited school can offer financial aid. This can help cut back on the reservations that many adults have about going back to school. Many schools offer financial aid specialists that help individuals hatch just the right plan to get them where they want to go.

An information technology degree has helped many individuals get high paying jobs with both large and small companies in every industry across the board. Some information technology jobs can boast the highest starting salaries of any career choice available. This has made information technology jobs one of the most sought after careers ever.

The incorporation of technology-engineering standards into the core academic framework, initially led by the state technology education organization, was a first step toward incorporating these concepts into the educational system. In the early to mid 1990s, industrial arts made a shift to technology education. The technology education programs at the time (many of which still exist) are generally characterized as elective, supplementary programs that focus primarily on the development of student skills and products, but not on trade skills or tool use as industrial arts had emphasized. The new discussion about becoming a core academic discipline pushed technology education to consider the implications of yet another shift: moving away from a supplemental, technical-oriented technology education program toward an academic, knowledge-oriented this program.

This change was even further removed from the long and productive history of skills development and tool use. Although individual teachers made progress in making this transition, and created an initial set of this courses in the process, many technology education staff did not want to make another shift. Thus the implications of the second shift continue to pose a significant challenge to the systematic implementation of this standards in Massachusetts.

The question has split the state’s technology education organization in two: one side is aligned more with the industrial arts-technology education perspective and the other is aligned with the technology-engineering-academic perspective. People watching this process, including school and district science staff, curriculum coordinators, and administrators, took the split as one reason to delay the incorporation of this concepts into school programs.

Between 1996 and the mid-2000s, science staff and organizations generally did not take ownership of this standards, which they viewed as the responsibility of technology education teachers. Another reason for delay, not associated with the organizational events but related to the recent shift away from industrial arts, was that educational staff and parents were slow to change their conception of past technical-oriented programs and embrace the possibility of an academic this program.

Only recently have more schools and districts begun to transition technology education programs into their science departments. Those that have often merge the two departments into a “science and technology-engineering department.” This is due, in part, to several developments. First, the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (the Department) has worked over the years to align all state policies so that this is treated the same way all other science disciplines are treated. This provides schools and districts with the support they need to develop academic technology engineering programs. Second, relationships between the two technology education organizations are starting to heal. And finally, the Boston Museum of Science (the Museum), with its associated National Center for Technological Literacy, has become a leader in promoting technology-engineering.

These developments have moved the discipline away from the tensions of organizational strife and associations with past technical programs. The Museum’s development of this curriculum provided an image for administrators, science staff, and parents of what a this curriculum could look like. It also showed how technology-engineering concepts were related to more traditional science concepts. In addition to educating administrators and guidance staff, the curriculum has had a significant impact on the establishment of this programs across the state.

The weapon powder metallurgy technology refers to the technology that use metal or other powder materials with mixing powder compacts, sintering, molding and post-treatment process to manufacture a variety of porous, semi-compact or compact weapons parts and products. A new generation of weapons and equipment needs more advanced manufacturing boron powder techniques to meet these requirements. Knowing what is unknown sounds like a Zen koan, and perhaps it is. We admit that competitive technologies strategic blindness may be a difficult concept to grasp, but solving this riddle may mean the difference between success and failure for your company.

Blindness, in the sense of not knowing what we don’t know, is a root cause of serious defects in the strategic competitive intelligence gathering process: defects such as not choosing a broad enough set of search strategies, not selecting the relevant cross-over subject areas, or missing the extreme ends.

The costs of under-sampling, overlooking or misinterpreting key competitive technological intelligence can be huge.

Consider the fact that only about 75 companies from the 1960′s S&P 500 are still in existence. What happened to the other 425? Could competitive intelligence blindness have played a part?

One problem is that “blindness” costs are often hidden. It is difficult to measure revenues that are not earned because a product lacks certain competitive features, key features that might have been added had the technologies intelligence gathering phase been more wide ranging.

However, the competitive “blindness” costs of patent infringement penalty payments, and cease and desist orders are more visible. These can be measured as huge, often in hundreds of millions of dollars.

In many such IP infringement cases, the losing party will claim surprise that the competitor is bringing a claim. This may or may not be a courtroom tactic.

It has been our experience in working with many technologies companies that often the organization’s technology landscape scenarios are too narrowly scoped, and they are truly dumbfounded to find that they were transgressing. This is particularly the case when the intellectual property in question was developed in an industry different from their own.

If we wanted to make it simple, we could say that the fixable causes of competitive technology strategy blindness might be due to lack of attention, or might result from time and money saving decisions made at some point.

But if we delve a little more deeply into the Zen-like nature of strategic technologies blindness, we learn that it can often be caused by “too much knowing.”

It turns out that blindness is largely built in to any “expert” scoping process — due to inherent under-scoping biases of the human mind. In other words, the “experts” think they have a good sense of what sufficiently broad sampling boundaries are needed to draw conclusions with a 98% degree of confidence.

The experts are wrong, says Nassim Taleb in “The Black Swan.”

Taleb cites Philip Tetlock’s study of twenty seven thousand predictions by experts, experts who believed their predictions were narrowly bounded. The results of the study didn’t back them up; the error rates were many times what these experts had predicted. Interestingly, Tetlock found no differential advantage between those experts holding graduate degrees versus those with undergraduate degrees.

Taleb also offers studies by Albert and Raiffa to further open our minds to the blindness conundrum. The experts they studied said they had scoped their datasets to have 98% confidence of completeness, This means they their intended error rate to be bounded at 2%. However, it turned out they were off by 15-30%.

Albert and Raiffa then tested their Harvard MBA students. These non-experts under-estimated sufficient dataset scope by a whopping 45%. Taleb frames these percentages as
“the difference between what people actually know and how much they think they know.”

The belief that data scoping encompasses 98% of the relevant set, when it is more likely embraces only 70-85%, has a serious impact on the range of possibilities considered at the very beginning of the entire intelligence gathering process. It potentially leaves too many possibilities unconsidered – and also confers a degree of confidence in the risk profile of the final product commercialization strategy that is unwarranted.

How big might this under-scoping error be in your organization? What are the implications of this “blindness” if your business strategy is centered around “disruptive technologies” or “blue oceans” or predicting revenues from the execution of “open innovation” technology transfer?

To formulate a winning technology innovation strategy, a sufficiently broad competitive intelligence scan of technology options is essential to illuminate potential breakthrough opportunities, as well as to expose potentially devastating “hidden” risks.

Leading companies have processes and visualization tools in place to mitigate this proven “expert blindness” problem.

They do this by increasing the scope of their global technologies landscape search process massively in the first instance, followed by including varied insights gained through cross-functional collaborative validation of the data. This collaborative vetting of broadly open options and possibilities happens at the very beginning, and continuously throughout, the product strategy development process.

Understanding the expert bias toward blindness is key to adequately scoping and validating competitive technologies intelligence, and questioning other’s assumptions. Going out of bounds to look for cross-over ideas that will surprise competitors is a worthwhile ongoing strategic business pursuit.

Knowing more of what is unknown is becoming a continuously improving core competency within organizations that are focused on sustaining significant competitive success in the marketplace.

As students discuss and try new ideas while learning the new technology or software, they are improving their ability to work out problems without the help of adults and become better at communicating. This ability to work together to solve problems carries forward into adulthood, when students will need the skills to succeed in future careers.

Technology is a useful tool that teachers can add to the classroom setting. It has a wide range of potential benefits that can improve student learning, motivate and help for better life skills. Technological determinism is a theoretical and methodological set according to which the level of development of science, technology, information and technology of big scale production defines social and economical development as a whole. It is also defined as any large scale technological measurement that leads to any social change.

The main role in social and economical developments belongs to technology according to this concept. This definition appeared about a hundred years ago after great success in science and technology developments and their growing effectiveness in mass usage and production.

The term ‘Technological Determinism’ was first coined by Thorstein Veblen, an American economist and sociologist who lived from 1857 to 1929. Broken down into its constituents, “technology” means the practical application of science to commerce or industry, whilst “determinism” refers to a philosophical doctrine holding that all events are inevitable consequences of antecedent sufficient causes; often understood as denying the possibility of free will.

Theories related to determinism, for example: linguistic, genetic, biological and environmental determinism, have been around for a few centuries. But it was until the Industrial Revolution that scholars and sociologists started noticing the implications of technology on society. Technological Determinism has been often dismissed in the past, but in the society of the present, it has a gained newfound accreditation with the introduction of modern technology.

In 1950, the great Canadian economic historian, Harold Innis, wrote a book titled “Empire and Communications”. Innis noted that “the subject of communications… occupies a crucial position in the organization and administration of government and in turn of empires and western civilization” Beneath his discourse on various world chapters, Innis concealed the basics of a model showing how different communications technologies have affected cultures.

In another of his famous works, “Bias of Communication”, Innis writes that each civilization that has developed across history takes its form from a “bias” created by the prevalence of a type of communication.

Marshall McLuhan (1911-1980) served on the faculty at Toronto with Harold Innis, and acknowledged Innis’s contribution to his theory, but the two had little direct contact. McLuhan believed that the new electronic media have radically altered the way people think, feel, and act. He is probably best known for his phrase which he turned into the book title, “The Medium is the Massage” (now more widely quoted as the medium is the message).

His notion is that the message is greatly impacted by the system in which the message is delivered. What we say is of much lesser importance than how we choose to deliver it. His belief in technological determinism is obvious by his phrase, “we shape our tools and they in turn shape us”.

It is Innis and especially Marshall who gave credence to the concept of technological determinism. It is perhaps the evolution of technology after the invention of the telegraph which is especially fitting to the argument of technological determinism. The 20th century had impacts on the societal structure with every new technological advancement that took place. The inventions of the telephone, followed by the radio, then the television, have made uncountable changes in the ways society interact. The rate at which technology evolved in the last century had far exceeded that of any century before it, and just as accordingly, the rate at which the society had changed in the last century was unprecedented.

Messages were distributed farther, faster, and with less effort. News was packaged differently, and had a new emphasis, as did popular entertainment. These developments were paralleled and influenced by a century-long transition to a predominantly industrial economy, with its accompanying urbanization. One result was the emergence of “mass society”. This same period also saw the bicycle, automobile, and airplane emerge as significant modes of transportation. The sense of space they fostered, coupled with the increased speed of railway and steamship travel, led to World Standard Time via the creation of time zones, further shifting cultural identification away from the immediate and local.

The above is the basis for the technological determinism argument. Its basis is in the belief that technology is at the root of our social change. When technology advances, society follows in its shadow.

Technological determinism is a controversial concept. There are those who agree with it, and those who strongly oppose it as well. Even amongst those who agree with it, their views on the concept vary greatly.

It is true that technological determinism is a dominant force that shapes and changes society. It can either be seen as a threat to our own free will, or it can be seen as a guiding tool that leads us to more effective ways of communicating. It is a force that cannot be overlooked.

Nevertheless, it is impossible to justify the insistence that technology or media is the fundamental factor which propels society. But it must be admitted that the evolvement of technology has widespread consequences which cannot be denied. Any technological change which is large enough is likely to produce some social change.

Technology is just one of the many mediating factors in human behavior and social change. In the face of the evidence which can be drawn from the past century, I am compelled to believe in the theory of technological determinism. But as mentioned, there are different modes of determinism for this theory, and it is the “Soft technological determinism” which makes the most sense to me. It is less extreme and allows the possibilities of other factors to determine the trend of the future. It is my belief that after technology has permeated every section of our society, other factors will play a much bigger role than technology in the influence of our society.
